Ahold Delhaize USA to Invest $860M in Burlington Distribution Center

In a significant boost to the local economy, Ahold Delhaize USA, the parent company of Food Lion and other major grocery brands, is set to invest a substantial $860 million in Burlington, North Carolina. This investment will fund the construction of a cutting-edge distribution center, creating a projected 500 jobs at full capacity.

Governor Josh Stein expressed enthusiasm over the project, stating, “Food Lion has years of experience feeding North Carolina. We are excited that Ahold Delhaize USA has chosen to double down on its investment in the state and establish this important new facility in Burlington.”

Ahold Delhaize USA operates five prominent grocery brands, including The GIANT Company and Stop & Shop, and is recognized as the largest grocery retail group on the East Coast. With operations expected to begin in 2029 after construction starts in 2026, the Burlington facility will enhance the company’s ability to serve its 26 million weekly customers.

JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA, highlighted the consumer benefits, saying, “The investment into this facility is an investment into the customers that trust our brands to nourish their families.” This development will also bolster the company’s capacity through ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation, supporting Food Lion’s growth in the state.

Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley remarked on the decision, noting, “It’s a notable vote of confidence when a company that knows us well and, after surveying other alternatives, decides to expand their operations in our state.”

The economic impact is further underscored by a $250,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund, structured to support the project’s financial needs without upfront payment, contingent on job creation and investment milestones. This fund requires matching grants from local governments to activate financial support.

N.C. Representative Alan Branson reflected on the significance of the investment, calling it the largest in the Burlington area in recent memory. He highlighted the readiness of the community to welcome and support the new jobs and operations. North Carolina Senator Phil Berger also emphasized the collaborative efforts behind the project, which promises to inject millions into the state’s economy.

The venture is backed by a coalition of state and local entities, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and several educational and governmental organizations. This partnership underscores the strategic efforts to enhance economic opportunities and job growth in the region.
